This article will talk about the best way to dehull your home grown coffee using a common household appliances that everyone has! This article is part of a series where we walk through all the steps of growing and processing your coffee at home. In the tutorial I am using my own coffee beans that I grew and have already gone through fermentation and drying. More details about these processes can be found in this article: “How to Grow Coffee At Home”
What you will need?
- Dried Coffee Beans (not-roasted)
- Blender (Recommended Blender: Ninja Blender on Amazon)
- Large Bowl
How to do it?
However it is possible to physically dehull your coffee beans one at a time by hand, the most common at home method is do roll the beans in-between two flat objects. While this works great and I have tried doing it myself it was very very time consuming.
My method is to use a blender. I specifically use a Ninja Blender (Amazon) because it has a smaller container. Because we are working with small beans, I find it most effective to use a smaller blender such that the blades will come into contact with the majority of the beans thus dehulling them.
The trick: do not to run the blender for too long. If you do you could risk grinding up all your precious coffee beans. Run the blender a once for just a second. Then give the container a good shake to try to get the beans on the top to move to the bottom where the blades are. Run the blender again for just a split second. Repeat this process until it looks like the majority of the hulls have come off the beans. While you may lose some beans due to the blades, in my experience I have rarely lost any.
Finally, pour the beans into a bowl and walk outside. Blow into the bowl and the hulls will come flying out while the beans stay in the bowl. Be careful not to blow the beans out as well. Continue this process until all that’s left in the bowl is the dehulled coffee beans. Boom you’re done, you have learned the best way (without a dehulling machine) to dehull coffee and it’s finally time to roast!
